Does the new tire's load index and speed rating measure up?

The number and letter after a tire size, like the 94V in 225/45R17 94V, are its load index and speed rating. Enter the ones on your current tire and on the tire you're looking at to see the load each carries, per tire and for all four, and whether the new one meets or exceeds the old. Start from what your vehicle maker specifies on the door placard.

Below your current tire on load index and speed rating. Not recommended by tire makers. Load index 91 carries up to 1,356 lb (615 kg) per tire, 121 lb less per tire than your current 94. H is tested to 130 mph, below your current V (149 mph). Replacement tires should match or exceed the load index and speed rating your vehicle maker specifies.

The ×4 figure is four tires' combined maximum. What your vehicle is rated to carry is on its door placard.

A speed rating is the speed a tire was tested to carry its load. It is not a recommended driving speed.

  • SL (standard load) is the default when a tire shows no load marking.
  • XL (extra load) and LT tires carry more at higher pressures, per the tire maker's load and inflation tables. We confirm fitment on every order.
  • LT tires often show two load indexes, such as 121/118. The second is for pairs on dual rear wheels; the first is the one compared here.
  • Start from the load index and speed rating your vehicle maker specifies, on the door placard or in the owner's manual. The tires on the car now may not match it.

Text version of this demo

Compares a current tire's load index and speed rating with a replacement's, showing the load per tire and for four in pounds and kilograms, and whether the replacement meets or exceeds the current tire. A speed rating is the speed a tire was tested to carry its load, not a recommended driving speed.

Step by step

How to use it

  1. Find the load index and speed rating on your current tire's sidewall: the number and letter right after the size, such as 94V. The door placard or owner's manual lists what your vehicle maker specifies.
  2. Type it into “Your current tire”, or pick the load index and speed rating from the lists.
  3. Do the same for the tire you're considering.
  4. Read load and speed separately. A tire below your current one on either isn't a like-for-like replacement.

Questions

The things people ask next

Can I use a tire with a lower load index?

Replacement tires should match or exceed the load index your vehicle maker specifies. USTMA says never to go lower. A lower index means each tire is rated to carry less weight at its proper pressure.

Is the speed rating a speed I can drive at?

No. A speed rating is the speed a tire was tested to carry its load under lab conditions, not a recommended driving speed. Match or exceed the rating your vehicle maker calls for, and drive to the posted limit and the conditions.

What does XL after the load index mean?

XL marks an extra-load version of the size. It carries more than a standard-load tire of the same size, at the higher pressures in the tire maker's load and inflation tables. A tire with no load marking is standard load (SL).

Why does an LT tire show two load indexes?

An LT marking such as 121/118 gives two figures. The first is for a single tire, and the second is for pairs on dual rear wheels. Compare the first one.
